Bar Flower, the best book ever
This book FINALLY came out!!!
And it's really good. Really really really good. A wide-eyed, intelligent young American chick comes to Japan, only to have her soul crushed by uptight "we Japanese" traditionalists. She then throws herself into the world of hostessing, and learns a whole lot about herself and the country, realizes it's messed up, then leaves.
Then she falls in love with her life and Japan again. But that's all in post-production.
And it's just insanely entertaining. I command all of you to read it!

The girl in the book is American, I'm only part American, plus I grew up in Japan. I was never wide-eyed and in awe of this country like she was. To name but a few differences!
I see that YOUR book is coming along nicely ;)
Just knowing you from your blog I already knew these differences but does the book tell "from the authors viewpoint" what it is like being a hostess?
Yes my "book" is coming along. Getting comments from you helps me write it so PLEEEASE COMMENT!!!!!
BTW - What time is it there?
Doc
I hadn't heard of those other two books, but they look good too. This blog is turning into a book club!
Does it say Decandedly on the cover? I am not sure what that means. I guess it's some sort of slag word?
Ah...not to be rude boys and girls...I do know what decadently means. That's not what it looks like on the image of the book. It looks like how I spelt it above. Which is why i was a little confused. i couldn't tell if it was due to some artifact of the image loss of quality or if it was some maga-like word i was ignorant of. take a look even at the larger image of it on amazon.
Either way it still looks interesting but I was just curious about the funny word. Words interest me and their etymology is often interesting. Like Vanilla...look it up. Will change your perception of vanilla ice-cream forever!
What do you think decandedly would mean? The opposite of candid? Full of Sh**? That's kind of what hostessing's all about.
I like vanilla too :)
I dunno what it would mean. i thought it could be anything from a badly printed word on the cover, which would be funny but suck for your friend... to maybe it wasa japanimation type word mangle. A mixture of decanted and candid?
Straining the shit out of the profession? :)
Beats me.
